 | One of the great tragedies in rock & roll was the untimely death of Sublime's Bradley Nowell, which came right before the release of what was to be their breakthrough self-titled album. The album went on to be a huge success and a terrific album despite no band to tour behind it. One thing I found amusing was the way the album combined dark and often violent lyrics with cheerful melodies (e.g. Santeria). I wonder how many people never listened closely to the words and completely missed that. |
| I love Cake's The Distance (#21). It showcased their unique sound--crunchy guitars, goofy lyrics, keyboards, trumpet, etc. However the formula gets tedious after a while and all of their subsequent albums follow it way too closely. |
