Commentary

bulletWas this an amazing year or what?  I would say about half of my top ten albums of the 90s came out in this one year.  Two great veteran bands--U2 and R.E.M., came out with arguably their best albums, the Red Hot Chili Peppers came out with an album that I don't think anybody thought they were capable of, and then Nirvana and Pearl Jam released the albums that launched the grunge phenomenon and put alternative on the map.  The peak for Pearl Jam's Ten came later--only Alive made the list, and that was only at #106.
bulletTo me the Nirvana explosion marked a turning point for KROQ and similar stations--there is the pre-Nirvana era and the post-Nirvana era, and the two are quite different.  The Roq of the 80s new wave stuff was out, and a more...I dunno...ironic, self-conscious, dark, more "real", whatever...music style was in.
